Weshall now take a close look at some peculiarities ofidioms. An important fact that must be underlined is that phrasal verbs are not only colloquial expressions, as a lot of people believe. They can be found in formal style and in colloquial speech. They can emerge in poetry or in the language of Dickens and the Bible.

What, then, is an idiom? We may say that an idiomatic expression is some number of phrases which, taken in the same place, mean something unique from the individual words of the idiom when they stand individually. Other idiomatic expression are absolutely ordinary and logical in their grammar and vocabulary. Because of the peculiar properties of some idioms, we have to study the idiomatic expressions as a whole and we occasionally fail to amend any part of it (except maybe, only the grammatical form of the verb).
English language is very rich in idiomatic expressions. In fact, it is hard to speak or write English language without using idioms. An English native speaker is very often not aware that he is using an idiom; maybe he does not even realize that an idiom which he uses is grammatically incorrect. A non-native learner makes the correct use of idiomatic English one of his main aims, and the fact that some idioms are illogical or grammatically wrong causes him trouble. Only careful study and exact learning will help.
It is impossible to be explained why a particular idiom has developed an unusual arrangement or choice of phrases. The idiom has been fixed by long usage as is sometimes seen from the vocabulary.
